Microsoft's AI updates, Meta's new Chameleon, Anthropic cracks the 'black box', & more!
Welcome to the AI Search newsletter. Here are the top updates in AI this week.
Microsoft Build 2024: Huge AI updates
Microsoft's Build event marks a significant milestone in the evolution of AI tools for developers. The company has introduced numerous innovations, including Real-Time Intelligence, which enables faster decision-making, and GitHub Copilot extensions, which allow for greater customization. Additionally, Microsoft has announced new frontier models, such as GPT-4o and Phi-3-vision, which offer multimodal capabilities. The company is also partnering with Khan Academy to empower educators with AI-powered tools and collaborating with Cognition AI to bring autonomous AI software to customers.
Meta Unveils Chameleon, a Breakthrough Multimodal AI Model
Meta has introduced Chameleon, a revolutionary early-fusion multimodal model that can process multiple types of input, such as images, text, and code, simultaneously, unlike traditional late-fusion models. This architecture allows Chameleon to integrate associations from the start, making it more accurate and efficient. The model was trained on a massive dataset of approximately 4.4 trillion texts, images, or pairs of tokens and can accept text-only, images-only, or a combination of both, generating intelligent answers and associations with better accuracy than its competitors.
New OpenAI live demo of Sora, Voice Engine, and Realtime Voice Assistant
OpenAI performed a live demo of generating a fully narrated video using Sora and their text-to-speech platform, Voice Engine, at Vivatech 2024. Plus they’ve hinted at future plans such as adding agentic capabilities and GPT-NEXT. Here’s a full breakdown:
ChatLLM by Abacus
ChatLLM by Abacus AI is an integrated platform that allows enterprises to use multiple LLMs, deploy custom agents, and collaborate with team members. Choose from state-of-the-art LLMs such as GPT-4o, Claude 3 Opus, and their new open source Smaug.
Cracking Open the Black Box: Anthropic Uncovers Secrets of AI Decision-Making
Researchers at Anthropic have made a breakthrough in understanding how artificial neural networks make decisions. By using a technique called dictionary learning, the team was able to identify specific combinations of artificial neurons that correspond to specific concepts or "features" in a large language model called Claude. This allows them to peek inside the "black box" and understand why the model produces certain outputs. The researchers were able to identify millions of features, including some related to safety concerns, and even manipulate the model to produce safer outputs.
New Approach to Reduce Hallucinations in Large Language Models
Researchers at DeepMind have developed a method to mitigate hallucinations in LLMs by using the models to evaluate their own potential responses. The approach leverages conformal prediction techniques to develop an abstention procedure that bounds the hallucination rate. The method was tested on two publicly available datasets and outperformed baseline scoring procedures, allowing LLMs to abstain from answering questions when their responses are likely to be nonsensical or untrustworthy.

OpenAI Apologizes to Scarlett Johansson Over AI Voice Controversy
OpenAI has apologized to Scarlett Johansson after she accused the company of using a synthetic voice similar to hers in their AI technology, GPT-4o. OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, denied that the voice, called "Sky," was based on Johansson's, stating that it was created in collaboration with a professional actress. Johansson had expressed outrage over the similarity, saying she was "shocked, angered, and in disbelief" that OpenAI would pursue a voice so similar to hers. The company has paused the use of the "Sky" voice out of respect for Johansson.
